This is to build mutual trust as much as it is for practice: The officer learns to trust the specialists that the Fleet has assigned to them, and the enlisted ratings learn to trust the officers they have had a hand in training. Midshipmen aboard ship are expected to extensively consult and accept critique from the enlisted ratings they may be placed above. The corps of cadets may have its own rank structure, but on the books they are all the same rank. In the New Republic FleetOps, officer cadets are assigned the rank of Midshipmen when training begins at the New Republic Fleet Academy. Upon completion of training, a Midshipman would typically be awarded a rank equivalent to a 2nd Deck Officer and sent to Imperial Naval College. In the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire, the rank of Midshipman would be awarded at the beginning of their training at the Imperial Naval Academy. Time spent aboard ship as a Midshipman is generally short: When the officer assigned to supervise their training ( Ensign or above) judges them ready, the Midshipman will be promoted and continue on with their training. Becoming a Midshipman is the first road to command. A Midshipman can take command only in emergency situations when no other officers are available, and then only on a temporary basis. They can be placed in command positions, but the purpose is for the Midshipman to learn from those they have been placed in charge of-not for them to be in charge. After technical training, they are assigned to a ship on-the-job training as apprentices. They are not eligible for command or supervisory roles. As officer trainees, they are still learning the responsibilities and core competencies of their job. Said cadet is still completing their training and are as such not commissioned, but still officers (ranking above enlisted and warrant officers) and as such entitled the customs, courtesies, and respect due their position. The rank of Midshipman typically signifies an officer cadet in a navy.
